CLARIFICATION: NEBO HAS NO INTENTION OF ASKING READERS TO KILL OFF ANYONE WHEN YOU GO TO INDIA AS A MEANS TO “GREET” SOMEBODY, AND NEBO IS NOT TO BE BLAMED IF YOU REALLY HARM ANYONE, INCLUDING YOURSELF. WE ARE ALSO NOT TRYING TO DISCOURAGE ANYONE FROM TRAVELLING TO INDIA, INDEED, WE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO VISIT THE COUNTRY IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE THE UNIQUE SPECIAL CULTURE.

North Sentinel Island is the destination that you must avoid if you value your life. Located in the Bay of Bengal, its inhabitants can be best described as less than welcoming. In fact, just about every encounter with the Sentinelese people has resulted in conflict.

The population of the Sentinelese is estimated to be only between 50 and 400 individuals. The island is best described as “untouched by modern civilization”. Indeed, they face the potential threats of infectious diseases from the rest of the world, as well as violence from intruders. The Indian government has thus declared the entire Island and its surrounding waters extending three miles from the island to be an exclusion zone.

The island is a semi autonomous area of India. While the territory technically belongs to India, due to the ferocity of the islands inhabitants, the island practically has its own form of self government. It doesn’t have an official language, and no one knows for sure just how many people live there. Some estimates place the population from 40 up to 500. Most estimates place the figure somewhere between 250 and 300.

The Sentinelese wants only one thing. To remain undisturbed. Over the years, most of the contacts made by outsider with the inhabitants result in brutal attacks and killing attempt. Following the tsunami in 2004, the helicopter sent to the island by the government offering aid was attacked by arrows and rocks. In 2006, 2 fisherman fishing near the island were killed when they got too close to the coast. The rescue helicopter that was sent to retrieve the bodies were attacked even after that.

So anyway, in case you are going to India, be careful of where you go, plan an escape route and run for your life in case of anything unusual.
