If you study in Hong Kong, you must have heard of the 5 "must-dos" as a university student: Study; Be part of an executive committee; Experience the hall culture; Work part-time; Fall in love. Exchange is never one of them, but still, it has its importance. NEBO will discuss why exchange programme is a life-changing experience for many of us.
1. Experience a new culture
During the exchange programme, you have the chance to thoroughly experience the culture of the country. You can experience the differences in cuisine, architecture, familial tradition, and even the ways that people start a conversation because you will be received by local students in the country. This is an excellent learning opportunity that allow participants have a better understanding for people of all sorts, and you can share your experience with your friends when you come back to Hong Kong!
2. Learn a new language
Imagine, you will be bombarded by a completely new language upon your arrival, not only visually, but also auditorily. You will learn the language from native speakers much better, and faster than you ever could, sitting in a classroom, learning from a (boring) lecturer! If you do not speak the language, expose yourself to a brand new language and see if you will fall in love with it. It sure will help you in the future by allowing you to explore new interests, and will likely also help widen your range of future options.
3. Meet new friends
Going on overseas projects let you meet tonnes of new friends around the globe. Not only will you meet your fellow friends from other institutions of Hong Kong, but also local buddies in the exchange country. We assure you, the friendships that one creates on exchange are often very long-lasting – and studded with great memories!
4. Talent exchange
Everybody in one way or another has some underlying talents, may it be your way of socializing or your skills in music.
Through the exchange prorgramme that NEBO offers, you can make use of your talents by volunteering to help people in need. What's more, you get to inspire and receive help from others.
5. Personal development
Everything is new, as you go to a foreign place with a completely different language and culture. It can be frightening, but that will teach you a lot! Having enjoyed the good and survived the bad components abroad, you will certainly return to Hong Kong with newfound strength, confidence, and self-understanding.
