Innovative solutions for water purification I

Modern inventions and innovations make life easier, they are being created and implemented in different parts of the world to serve different populations. Today, let see what scientists thought of to help purify water. Only portable versions are included here because they may be useful for travellers, hikers, etc!
1. Aluminium sulphate and powered sodium hypochlorite (bleaching powder)
Aluminium Sulfate (aka "Alum" and "明礬") reacts with the bicarbonate alkalinities present in water when added to muddy water and forms precipitate. This attracts other fine particles and suspended stuff in the water, and will flock and settle down at the bottom of the container finally. The water, after removing the sediment should be almost clean other than some fine particles dissolved inside. The amount you need depends on the water.
Bleaching powder is for disinfecting the water, just as what they do with the swimming pool water. Just add one or two teaspoons of the powder and mix well with the water, and you are good to go!
After you add both aluminium sulphate and sodium hypochlorite, just allow the water to set overnight, and you obtain clean water for drinking and cooking.

In case you don't know, aluminium sulphate can be bought at pharmacies or hardware store usually. And there is a readily available version called PUR purification powder, which is not available in Hong Kong currently.
